About Lancaster

The City of Lancaster, established 1797, serves as the county seat of Garrard County, and sits in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains.  Lancaster's geographic location serves as a cross-roads for the region as it sits at the heart of Lexington, Richmond, Danville, Somerset, and Berea.  The Lancaster Square is a hub of activity at the intersection of Highways 27 and 52.

With a population of well-over 4,000, Lancaster is rich in history.  Lancaster and Garrard County boast four former governors and the beautifully restored Governor William Owsley House in Lancaster serves as a popular tourist attraction.  Nearly 50 buildings in the city are listed on the National Historic Register with a number of them in the downtown area currently undergoing renovation.  Most prominent of these that has already undergone renovation is the Grand Theater, originally constructed in 1925.  The Garrard County Historical Society is also located in Lancaster.

Lancaster supports K-12 public schools and post-secondary education via the Lancaster Higher Education Center, which houses a campus of Eastern Kentucky University.  Lancaster's Public Library, housed in buildings dating back to 1810 and 1850, has long enjoyed the patronage of its citizens 

The Chamber of Commerce is actively involved in the community, providing valuable services such as free training seminars and town hall meetings with local and state government representatives.  And the newly established Office of Economic Development is making significant strides in developing existing businesses and attracting new businesses to the city and county.

Lancaster also provides a number of religious outlets with its churches of varying denominations.
